Day 1

Day 2

ULAANBAATAR TO DALANZADGAD & EAGLE VALLEY

  • Enjoy breakfast before transferring to the airport for a 1-hour flight south to Dalanzadgad.
  • Drive south (~3 hours) into the dramatically carved canyon of Eagle Valley (Yolyn Am) within the Zuun Saikhan Mountains.
  • Enjoy trekking or optional horse/camel riding along the breathtaking rock walls where summer streams and waterfalls form along the gorge floor.
  • Carved deep into the Zuun Saikhan Mountains of the South Gobi, Eagle Valley is a dramatic, narrow canyon enveloped by towering sheer rock walls. Celebrated for its unique microclimate, the canyon floor remains sheltered from the fierce desert sun, historically preserving thick ice fields well into the summer months. As streams trickle through the shaded gorge, lush alpine greenery flourishes in stark opposition to the surrounding arid plains.

Day 3

DALANZADGAD TO KHONGORYN ELS (SINGING SAND DUNES)

  • Set out west on a full-day drive (200 km) from the mountains into the open Gobi terrain.
  • Arrive at Khongoryn Els, home to Asia’s largest sand dunes reaching up to 350 meters in height. Take a private drive toward the dunes before sunset and ride two-humped Bactrian camels along the lush Khongor River oasis.
  • Stretching for over 100 kilometers across the desert floor and soaring up to 350 meters high, Khongoryn Els ranks among the largest and most magnificent sand dune systems in Asia. Bordered by the lush Khongor River, the golden dunes form a massive natural wall that shifts and glows with the moving sun. The sharp contrast between emerald river marshes, sweeping sands, and dark mountain peaks creates one of the Gobi’s most breathtaking vistas.

Day 4

FLAMING CLIFFS (BAYAN ZAG) TO ONGIIN KHIID

  • Drive 3–4 hours (~150 km) to Bayan Zag (The Flaming Cliffs), famed for its glowing red sandstone, native Saxaul trees, and historical significance as the site where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first fossilized dinosaur eggs in 1921. Continue across the open steppe to Ongiin Khiid to explore the atmospheric ruins of a massive 1660 Buddhist monastery complex and meet local monks.
  • Rising dramatically out of the arid expanse of the Gobi, Bayan Zag is a striking landscape of glowing red sandstone cliffs framed by ancient Saxaul trees. The weathered bluffs, carved over millennia by wind and flash floods, form natural amphitheaters and intricate ridge structures. At sunset, the sandstone blazes in intense shades of fiery orange and crimson, living up to its world-famous moniker, "The Flaming Cliffs".
  • Beyond its visual grandeur, Bayan Zag holds immense paleontological importance on a global scale. It was here in 1921 that American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the world’s first fossilized dinosaur eggs, forever changing the study of prehistoric life. 
  • Perched along the banks of the Ongi River in a vast semi-desert steppe, Ongiin Khiid holds the atmospheric ruins of what was once southern Mongolia’s largest monastic complex. Founded in 1660, this historic spiritual sanctuary consisted of two major temple grounds housing over a thousand monks. The monastery served as an essential center for Buddhist learning, art, and pilgrimage along the traditional trade routes crossing the Gobi.
  • Destroyed during the political purges of the late 1930s, the remaining stone foundations now stand as a poignant testament to Mongolia’s resilient heritage. Day 5

ONGIIN KHIID TO KHARKHORIN & ERDENE ZUU MONASTERY

  • Drive north toward Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the ancient 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan along the Silk Road.
  • Tour the symbolic ruins of the capital and visit Erdene Zuu Monastery (built in 1586), featuring 108 stupas, active temples, and historic 8th–9th century Turkic monuments.
  • Located in the UNESCO-listed Orkhon Valley, Kharkhorin stands on the ground of Karakorum—the legendary 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan. As the diplomatic and commercial heart of a vast realm, ancient Karakorum welcomed envoys, traders, and scholars from across Europe and Asia. Today, stone turtle markers and ancient Turkic monuments scattered across the valley recall its era as the center of the world.

Day 6

KHARKHORIN TO HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK & ULAANBAATAR

  • Journey east toward Hustai National Park, renowned for its successful reintroduction of the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse), the world's last wild horse species.
  • Take a short hike to spot Takhi, red deer, and native wildlife before visiting the local research museum and returning to Ulaanbaatar for your final evening.
  • Encompassing rolling grassland steppe, granite outcrops, and birch-covered hills, Hustai National Park is a globally celebrated sanctuary for wildlife conservation. Located just west of Ulaanbaatar, the park protects a pristine ecosystem that highlights the raw, open beauty of central Mongolia’s natural landscapes. Its varied terrain provides a thriving habitat for a rich array of native flora and fauna.
  • Hustai is world-famous as the reintroduction site for the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse), the only remaining truly wild, un-domesticated horse species on Earth.
